Sacramento Spotlight: Food & Restaurants

Part of an ongoing series on what makes California — and the Sacramento region — home.
Sacramento's dining scene has quietly become one of the most compelling reasons to love this city. Built on the region's farm-to-fork identity and shaped by its cultural diversity, the food here reflects both where it's grown and who calls this city home. Getting to eat fresh, local food while traveling the world through my palate — without ever leaving town — is one of my favorite things about living here.
A Scene Built on Fresh, Local Ingredients
As America's Farm-to-Fork Capital, Sacramento's restaurants have direct access to some of the freshest produce in the state. That shows up across the board — from upscale Midtown dining rooms building menus around what's in season, to casual spots that source locally without making a big deal of it. From restaurants to food trucks to coffee shops, our local eateries have a habit of supporting each other, too — using one another's products in their recipes or selling them on their own shelves. Chefs here take pride in sourcing local, farm-fresh ingredients in every way, from the food on your plate to the cocktail in your glass, and those fresh, in-season flavors make a real difference.
A Truly Global Food City
What makes Sacramento's food scene stand out further is its diversity. With a population representing cultures from around the world, the city offers an unusually wide range of authentic cuisine for its size — from family-run Thai and Vietnamese pho spots to Ethiopian, Peruvian, Hmong, and countless others represented across the region. It's a contrast I notice every time I travel to other states, where the options beyond American food are often limited to Mexican and Italian — and not always authentic at that.
Why This Matters for Sacramento Living
For a lot of people moving here, the food scene is a genuine surprise — often exceeding expectations for a mid-sized California city. It's one of the details that makes everyday life here feel richer, whether it's a regular neighborhood spot or a special-occasion dinner Downtown. Sharing my favorite places to eat with people new to the area is one of my favorite things to do — when someone is relocating, I find out what and how they like to eat and put together a list of my go-to spots for them to try. It's also not uncommon for my own neighbors to ask me for recommendations.
A Few of My Local Favorites
For Fine Dining and Special Celebrations
Ella Dining Room and Bar - I love Ella so much that I actually had my Wedding Dinner there.
Allora - A true dining experience for anyone who considers themselves a foodie.
Everyday Dining
Shangri-la - A great everyday spot that's just as good for birthdays and other celebrations, with the best patio in the Sacramento region. Beyond the food and the Palm Springs–inspired design, the owners have built a real community here!
Out of Bounds Brewery and Kitchen - Don't let the name fool you: beer, wine, cocktails, mocktails, and food options that go way beyond "bar food," whether you're eating healthy or not. My go-to dish is the Seasonal Market Bowl. My go to dish is the Seasonal Market Bowl.
Global Cuisine
Tapa the World - Sacramento's best tapas spot for sharing small plates with friends, with amazing sangria to match!
Thai Paradise - The freshest, most flavorful Thai food around. I've recommended it to people who swear they don't like Thai food, and they end up becoming regulars.
Tangs Sushi - We have a lot of mediocre sushi in this region and only a couple of places that keep me coming back — Tangs is one of them. It's so good I'll drive nearly an hour and wait another hour for a table; the menu is creative and unique, with the freshest, largest cuts I've had at any sushi restaurant.
Tres Hermanes - Ask most Sacramentans for the best Mexican food in town and you'll get the same answer nine times out of ten. The food is authentic and consistently good, and the margaritas are strong.
Treats
Ginger Elizabeth - Hands down the best chocolates and treats around. The macarons are perfection, the hot chocolate is award-winning, and so are the ice cream sandwiches. Ginger prides herself on locally sourced ingredients, from nuts to fruit to whiskey, and I'm grateful on a regular basis that her business calls this city home. I don't eat a lot of sweets, but when I do, it's Ginger Elizabeth — and yes, she ships if you're not local.
Coffee
Temple - Funny enough, I don't even like coffee, but I'm still a regular here for the best house-made chai, where you can actually taste the warm spices. They also carry pastries from local favorites like Sugarplum Vegan Bakery, with a range of gluten-free options. With nine locations throughout Downtown and the surrounding area, you'll find every one of them busy any time of day.
The Bigger Picture
Sacramento's food scene reflects everything that makes this city special — its agricultural roots, its diversity, and its community spirit, all showing up on the plate. It's one of my favorite things to explore, and one more reason this city continues to feel like home. There are still so many amazing places I haven't tried yet, and honestly, with new spots opening all the time, that list never stops growing.
