Sacramento Spotlight: Sacramento's Farmers Markets

Sacramento has officially branded itself "America's Farm-to-Fork Capital" — and our farmers markets are where that identity really comes to life. With over 40 farmers markets across the region, some open year-round, there's really no excuse not to make it out to one.

Why Sacramento Earns the Title

Sacramento sits in the middle of California's Central Valley, one of the most productive agricultural regions on the planet. That proximity means shorter distances from farm to table and access to an extraordinary range of fresh, seasonal produce nearly year-round. It also helps keep the cost of fresh produce down, and since you're often buying it almost straight off the vine, it lasts noticeably longer once you get it home.

A Market for (Almost) Every Day of the Week

The Sunday Certified Farmers Market at 8th & W Streets has been a Sacramento tradition for decades, but it's far from the only option. Neighborhood markets pop up throughout the week in Midtown, East Sacramento, Land Park, and beyond, along with markets in nearby cities like Folsom, Davis, and Roseville — making it easy to find one close to home no matter what day it is.

More Than Groceries

These markets have become weekly community gathering points — a place to run into neighbors, support local farmers and small businesses, and enjoy the kind of connected, small-town feel that's easy to find within a big, growing city. You never quite know who — or what — you'll run into, either. I've personally crossed paths with a pet tortoise and a parrot who was convinced he was Jack Sparrow, both at the Midtown Farmers Market.

For those living in Downtown and Midtown, a Saturday market run is practically part of the weekly routine — grab coffee, do some shopping, and put together a dinner with produce that couldn't be any fresher unless you grew it yourself.

For families using CalFresh/EBT, several of our farmers markets participate in the Market Match Program, which provides up to $15 per market, per card, toward fresh fruits and vegetables. With so many markets running throughout the week, that benefit stretches even further, helping more families access fresh, nutrient-dense food.

Many new and small businesses get their start at the farmers market, too — it's often their first real exposure to the community and a key place to build a loyal following before expanding further.

A Lifestyle Detail Worth Noting

When I'm showing clients around a potential neighborhood, I love pointing out the nearest farmers market. It's a small detail, but it says a lot about the day-to-day rhythm and community feel of an area — something that matters just as much as square footage when choosing where to live.

Farmers Markets Worth Noting

• Central Sacramento Sunday Certified Farmers' Market — Sun, 8am–12pm, 750 W St. Sacramento's first farmers market, dating back to 1980. Open year-round.

• Capitol Mall Farmers Market — Wed, 8:30am–2:00pm, 600 Capitol Mall (between 5th and 7th Streets). A favorite for those working Downtown near the Capitol. Runs April 30 – October 29.

• Midtown Farmers' Market — Sat, 8am–1pm, 20th St. between J & L Sts. and 19th & 21st Sts. (at 20th & K Streets). Open year-round.

• Historic Folsom Farmers Market — Sat, 8:30am–1pm, Historic Folsom Plaza, 915 Sutter Street. Open year-round.
