Snow is rare in the valley itself, but it's never far away — the Sierra Nevada is close enough to enjoy winter sports without dealing with winter commutes or shoveling your driveway at home.

Why It Matters for Everyday Life - The weather shapes more of daily life here than people expect — patio dinners nine months out of the year, outdoor markets, year-round hiking and biking, and gardens that thrive with a long growing season. When the Sacramento summer heat peaks, the coast and mountains are both close enough for a quick escape to cooler air.
